The Mercedes SL's from the 70-80's are icons. Nor sportscar nor roadster. Just pure luxury in style. Probably one of those cars people bought as a statement of their wealth and good taste. A fun fact is that Mercedes is still producing spare parts for all SL models ever made. They can be more expensive than newer models. Just like a 190 E is expensive, certain models are very high in demand and pricing. The series "Dynasty" in the 80's was almost a promotion for them. Yuppies drove Porsche, old money drove Mercedes. It was almost a statement of being well off and having good taste and class. Porsche was for the "nouveau riche" flashing money and being flamboyant.
